is helping
Proceeds from the 27th annual WellsFest will go to strengthen a little-known program that works to find permanent homes for foster children and youngsters in the child welfare system.Mississippi Families for Kids, established through a grant from the W. K. Kellogg Foundation in 1994, works statewide to:
*increase public awareness of the
need for adoption
*provide adoption services
*offer family support services
Frequently, children moved into the often-transient system of foster care can become developmentally, socially and educationally delayed.
They can develop emotional problems that will only compound their difficulties in later life, but the provision of a permanent home can provide them with a better foundation and the stability needed to avoid a negative future.
Many of the children helped by the agency are had to place--minorities, older kids or those with special needs.
Adoptive parents served by the agency are primarly low-moderate income and are more likely to adopt hard to place children.
While Mississippi Families for Kids was established through Kellogg Foundation grant, it now draws its support from individual donations, business contributions, the Dave Thomas foundation for Adoption and the organization’s annual Children’s Golf Classic.
Over the next few months, WellsFolks--and the public-- will be hearing more about this little organization with a big mission.
If you know of companies that might be interested in helping Mississippi Families for Kids as a corporate sponsor of WellsFest, please let tell us.
Jim Burt is this year’s WellsFest chairman, and his co-leaders are Sherree Allen and Brenda Ferguson.
WellsFest will be September 25, here before you know it.
